S Mark of Alexander Macrae. One Plate made in 1882, by Francis Higgins.
(The original service by Alexander Macrae was added to in 1882 by Francis Higgins on the run up to the wedding of Prince Leopold in 1883). Almost certainly for Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany K. This is a lovely set of twelve English silver dinner plates.
Eleven were made in 1863 in London by Alexander Macrae and one plate was made in 1882, by Francis Higgins. The original service by Alexander Macrae was added to in 1882 by Francis Higgins on the run up to the wedding of Prince Leopold in 1883. Therefore all twelve dinner plates are from the same service and absolutely identical.
They are in the George II style with beautiful gardrooned borders. The 1863 plates all bear the original retail stamp of? Phillips 23 Cockspur Street, London?
And are all numbered on the reverse. The highest number I could see is 60 therefore this must have been quite an impressive dinner service with at least 60 plates. All twelve plates bear the royal garter and it is almost certain that it is for Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany K.
Robert Phillips of Phillips Brothers was one of the most prominent British jewellers and retailers and are known to have worked alongside the famous jewellers Castellani and Giuliano. The Phillips Brothers firm, once located at 31 Cockspur Street, moved to 23 Cockspur Street and became known as Phillips Brothers & Son in 1869. Phillips supplied the English royal family with many great pieces of jewellery, silver and other wonderful items and therefore it is no surprise that these royal dinner plates were supplied to the Prince by Phillips.
