Set of 12 Victorian Silver Dinner Plates Made by BARNARD BROTHERS, LONDON worked 1817-c. Please scroll down for photographs below. A handsome set of antique sterling silver plates with plain styling and gadroon borders. Engraved to each top rim there is a crest and motto. They are numbered on the underside (originally a very large set).

Total weight 6595 grams, 212 troy ounces. Maker Walter & John Barnard. Biography: This old established manufacturing silversmith business was started by Anthony Nelme c.

1680 passing to Francis Nelme on his death in 1722. Thomas Whipham took over the business in 1739, passing it to his son Thomas Whipham jr in 1756 who took into partnership Charles Wright. The Barnard's involvement started in 1786 when the business was taken over by Henry Chawner; Chawner had been Edward Barnard Is master and Barnards son Edward became foreman of the firm. In 1796 John Emes became a partner and after the retirement of Chawner, Emes became owner maintaining Edward Barnard II as manager.

Emes died in 1808 and his widow Rebecca Emes took as partner Edward Barnard II. Rebecca Emes retired in 1829 and Edward Barnard I became the proprietor with his son Edward Barnard II, John Barnard and William Barnard, trading under the name Edward Barnard & Sons.

The firm was converted into a limited liability company in 1910 under the style Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd. In 1977 Edward Barnard & Sons Limited became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham Ltd. Literature: Originally from a large set, each plate has a number on the reverse side 99/33/74/84/89/72/50/81/70/75/71/83. Condition: This large set of silver plates are in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The silver hallmarks are all matching and clear.

There is some light scratching and wear from use and these have not been polished away. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age.
