RARE 1830's Copeland & Spode Fish Platter Set w NINE Matching Dinner Plates 9

  

From a local estate, here is a beautiful and very rare Copeland (they would soon add) fish set which includes one 22 1/2" by 10 1/2" platter and nine different 9 dinner plates... All with a different fish theme on them. The decoration is very unique and unlike any fish set I've seen. I've always found Limoges sets by Haviland and Tressemann and Vogt and these are quite nice as well, but I very much like these earlier Copeland pieces.

They are bold and I like the rendering of the different fish on the dinner plates. Also, the floral and leaf design around the border of the platter really pulls the color of the entire set together with a palette of Imari colors. A very interesting fish set! The condition of the ten pieces is quite good for their age. The plates are in nice shape with some general edge wear. One plate has a very small flat chip on the underside of the rim, but again... The large narrow platter has a beautifully clean underside. The platter has no chips, cracks or glaze crazing, but it does have a fair amount of utensil marks where it seems they chose to cut the fish directly on the platter...

Something that would have gotten my hand chopped off by my grandfather or grandmother had I tried it. Anyhow, these marks can be seen in the darker body of the fish. Aside from expected edge wear, the platter is in very nice shape. Really a rare and eclectic set that would look great in a well lit cabinet. Thanks very much for stopping by!
